Fort Kyk-Over-Al

Fort Kyk-Over-Al, located at the confluence of the Essequibo, Cuyuni, and Mazaruni rivers, is a historic Dutch fort in Guyana. Constructed in 1616, its name translates to “See Over All,” reflecting its strategic location with commanding views of the surrounding waterways.

Initially serving as the administrative center for the Dutch colony of Essequibo, the fort was a hub for trade and defense. It was built using bricks and timber, with a two-story structure that included a powder magazine. Over time, Fort Kyk-Over-Al faced challenges, including attacks from rival European powers and overcrowding. By 1748, the fort was abandoned, and its materials were repurposed for other constructions.

Today, only ruins remain, but the site is recognized as a national monument and holds significant historical value. Artifacts such as cannonballs and clay tobacco pipes have been discovered there, offering insights into its colonial past.
